INITIAL WORK TO START ON SHERINGHAM LEVEL CROSSING
The dream of re-uniting the Poppy Line with the main rail network by reinstating the
Sheringham level crossing is a step nearer reality. The North Norfolk Railway's project
director, Julian Birley, confirmed that EDP Energy has been commissioned to move vital
electrical cables to allow the crossing to be installed.
Mr Birley said: "The fundraising appeal has so far raised just over £90,000 of the
£140,000 we need - but if we are to complete the crossing this winter we have to instruct
EDF (who need 3 months' notice) now. Once the crossing is open, we plan to run some
charter trains which will each bring an extra 300 people into Sheringham outside the main
holiday season - so I hope local businesses will help us seize the opportunity and help us
to raise the final £50,000."
Many local business people believe the crossing will bring considerable benefit, citing
the extra visitors attracted by the railway's giant steam gala at the end of last February
and by special events like the upcoming '40s Weekend (this year on September 19th and
20th).
"If we can complete the crossing this winter, we plan to have a charter train headed
by crack steam loco Oliver Cromwell to open the link and be the centrepiece of a steam
gala in late February or early March next year," said Mr Birley.
