Special Olympics

I was lucky enough to go to this years Special Olympics in Leicester. It really was a great few days, even with the pouring summer rain trying its best to dampen spirits, competitors and spectators alike did themselves very proud. I managed to get around and see several of the sports on offer including Golf, Ten-Pin Bowling, Athletics, Cycling, Boccia, Power Lifting, Football and Tennis.

Our own East Region team, capably marshalled by Team Director, Norfolk's own Jill Dawson, had a very successful games picking up medals all over the place.

Some of my own personal highlights were Penny Kemp taking Gold in the Boccia, Sarah Simpson taking Gold in the Tennis and the huge success of all of our cyclists who collected a really impressive haul of 16 medals, including 5 golds, 2 silvers and a bronze on day 2 of the competition!

Congratulations go to Norfolk's Special Olympic Swimming Team who led by Carol Russell had a successfull games as well collecting 10 medals between the 4 of them including 6 Gold!

Everyone who competed though deserves lots of praise, it really was a fantastic achievement by all involved. A special mention has to go to Jill and Iain Dawson for all the hard work they put in both during the week and in the build up to the games, especially Jill, as it all wouldn't have happened without her immense efforts
