On Monday 1st September, Sheringham Mayor, Tricia Brooks presented Daphne Basham from Sheringham with The Elizabeth Cross and Memorial Scroll. This is granted by the Secretary of State for Defence in recognition of her and her family's loss and sacrifice from a grateful nation.

Daphne’s brother, L/Cpl Ian R George served with The Royal Green Jackets.  He lost his life in the conflict in Northern Ireland on 10th September 1972 aged just 25 years.

He was born when Daphne was 16 years old and her Father insisted that she be his God Mother, of which she was really proud.

In June this year, the Sheringham and District Branch of The Royal British Legion, Norfolk County, took a party of members to the National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire. Here Daphne was able to see her brother’s name carved onto the Armed Forces Memorial and laid a cross in his honour.

Both the visit to the Arboretum and presentation of the Elizabeth Cross were extremely moving experiences for all of us involved.
