Preparations for Sheringham Carnival are well under way, we now have our new Carnival Queen, Rosa Whiteman and her two attendants Felicity Farraway and Olivia Button. The Carnival starts on Friday 1st August and concludes on Sunday 10th. I thought it was time to tell you about the organization behind it. The Committee running the Carnival consists of 16 people all of who give their time freely; we even buy our own beer at meetings. They are all outsiders who have come to Sheringham and are keen to keep this tradition alive.
It costs about £20,000 to run this series of events, the cost of just printing the programme is about a £1 for each copy. We normally distribute about £4000 to local charities and organizations from the profit we make, in other words it is a non-profit making organization. The carnival is not funded by the Council or the Chamber of Commerce, we do however get the Central Car Park for free on Carnival Day and this year we are sharing it with the market.
Local businesses pay to advertise in the Carnival Programme and sponsor some of the events for which we are very grateful. This income sadly does not cover our costs; so we are now more dependent on the money you give in our collection buckets. We do get free publicity from local newspapers, radio & TV.
This year we have 76 events over the 11 days, including the Carnival Parade for which we ask you to provide the floats. How about more businesses and pubs providing the larger ones? Remember this is a way of advertising and now is the time to start thinking about building one. New this year are displays by:
The Newfoundland Dogs on land and in the sea,
We have Park & Ride organized from Sheringham High School on Carnival Day, Wednesday 6th May. The Carnival Caravan will be in town all week.
In conclusion please come and enjoy yourselves. Carnival represents
excellent value with plenty to keep the whole family entertained all week. Please buy a
programme we only ask for a donation and let's fill those collecting buckets.
