CATS PROTECTION

Earlier this year we received a grant from the Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust to provide two new pens for the cats at Stephanie's. Having seen some very nice pens at a local cattery we decided to purchase ours from the same place rather than from our usual suppliers.

The existing pens were taken down and one will be used to foster cats at a new site in due course. The other pen was in a poor condition and not up to our standards to be used for the cats. Once the electricity had been disconnected and the pens removed, the paving slabs were re-laid to await the new pens.

These have now arrived and although installation is not complete at the time of writing, we are very pleased with them. We still need to reconnect the electricity for their heating and lighting but expect them to be ready for occupation by the cats shortly. As they are so much bigger than the other pens we will be using them mainly for cats that have been with us some time and for those that come in from a multi cat household. Octavia and Figaro who have both been with us quite some time are eagerly looking forward to being the first cats to take up residence (unless they get loving new homes in the meantime). Figaro's brother Pippin has been re-homed. You will have seen photographs of Figaro and Pippin in the June Edition of the At Sheringham.

We are looking forward to contacting the lady from the Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust so that she can come and see the new pens and for all our supporters to admire them when they come to the Open Morning on 13th September.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please call Stephanie on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk for a description and photographs of the cats before giving her a call on the above number.

CARLO CURLEY IN DEMAND

A strong demand is reported for tickets for the Carlo Curley charity organ concert in Cromer.

The world famous organist will perform a varied programme of classical and popular pieces at Cromer Parish Church on Thursday evening, September 4 starting at 7.30 pm. Organised by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club, the concert will be Carlo Curley's only performance in Norfolk or Suffolk this year

Carlo Curley is described as a flamboyant and popular classical concert organist. Dubbed the Pavarotti of the Organ by the press, he is one of only a few concert organists worldwide who supports himself exclusively by giving recitals, concerts and master classes, without any supplements from teaching or church positions. He is cosmopolitan, and refers to three places as 'home': England, Scandinavia and North Carolina (USA).

Carlo Curley's basic approach to performing, while very much his own, pays homage primarily to that of Virgil Fox, aiming to make classical organ music popular to a wider audience, often including pieces from other classical genres arranged and transcribed by himself. He is the first classical organist to perform a solo organ recital at the White House, and he has also played before several European heads of state. He has toured extensively throughout the world, and has a large and loyal following.

Although unashamedly populist, he is acknowledged as a most gifted classical organist with an engagingly good-humoured, interpretive, 'big strings' style and a sparkling sense of registration, including the use of his 'trade-mark' mechanical singing bird-cage, placed on top of the organ console. His verve in performance is tremendous, imbued with enormous drive and colour.

Tickets (£10) can now be purchased from Randall's Electrical in Cromer, Bertram Watts in Sheringham, Joe Floyd on 01263 511260 or, if still available, on the night at the church door. The Rotary Club stresses it is very much a case of first come, first served.
