RAIL ALE REAL ALE RECORD
This year's 3-day North Norfolk Railway Beer Festival saw a record 7,216 pints downed
by real ale enthusiasts from as far afield as London, Gloucester and West Yorkshire. 90
different ales were on tap for sampling. The Festival was at the Poppy Line's
Sheringham Station on 18th - 20th July, and connecting Bittern Line services from Norwich
were especially busy on the first two days.
David Norman, landlord of CAMRA's South West London pub of the year, said: "The
atmosphere was superb, the beers served in perfect condition - this was a truly
professional Festival." The Festival moved across the tracks this year to
a new home on the station's platform 2, giving more space and comfort for the drinkers and
allowing bigger marquees - though apart from the occasional shower, the weather was very
appropriate for alfresco drinking.
Live entertainment from Classic Dixieland Jazz, the Kingsize Papas Swing Band, the Ugly
Dog Skiffle Combo (making a welcome return appearance) and Floydian Slip added to the
special atmosphere. Said organiser Nessa Pritchard: "The North Norfolk Railway
Beer Festival is now established as a premier event in the enthusiasts' calendar - and I'd
like to thank all the volunteers who helped make it such a success."

North Norfolk Photographic Society
North Norfolk Photographic Society (NoNoPS) in the past has shut up shop for the Summer
months, but on 13th August held the second of two special meetings.
Like the earlier meeting, this was a welcome and enjoyable evening and took the form of an
informal Photo Competition, with the 20 or so photographs that were entered by members
being judged by secret ballot by the members themselves - and before the identity of the
photographers was disclosed, were discussed by all, led by Bill Day - in his inimitable
and humorous manner.

The subject matter for the pictures was Transport - and we had buses, cars,
boats, aeroplanes and a lovely shot of a woman transporting her son on her back! Bill had
entered his own photo - a motorcycle pretending to be a Camel with a Michelin Man riding
pillion (or something) and was honest enough to admit that he thought it was far and away
the best shot in the show.
But - sadly for Bill - it was not the winner, which was a photograph of the Red Arrows in
Diamond Nine formation, flying at the Farnborough Air Show. The author of this lovely
picture is Roland Riddell - who happened to be at Farnborough because he worked for a
Company exhibiting there at the time.
NoNoPS Summer Exhibition is still on at the Stable Gallery, Kelling until 23rd
August and is well worth a visit - admission is free of charge!
