GARDENING
Check stored bulbs, tubers and corms. Discard any that are soft or diseased.
Late winter is the time to prune many deciduous trees. Look over your plants now and
remove dead, dying, or unsightly parts of the tree, sprouts growing at or near the base of
the tree trunk and crossed branches.
Don't start your vegetable plants indoors too early. Six weeks ahead of the expected
planting date is early enough for the fastgrowth species such as cabbage. Eight weeks
allows enough time for the slowergrowing types such as peppers.
Keeping the weeds at bay with a regular hoe is well worth it. If areas are clear of weed
it's a great time to mulch the beds with bark chips.
Now is the time to buy begonia, canna and dahlia tubers, together with the huge variety of
summer-flowering bulbs that are appearing in garden centres and nurseries, although it's
too early to plant these in the garden, you can have them ready.
