CHOCOLATE & APPLE CAKE
250g (9oz) plain flour
25g (1oz) cocoa
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. bicarbonate of soda
100g (4oz) butter, softened
250g (9oz) caster sugar
2 eggs, beaten
A few drops of vanilla essence
175ml (6 fl oz) milk
2 cooking apples, peeled, cored and finely chopped.
ICING
450g (1lb) icing sugar, sifted
25g (1oz) cocoa
50g (2oz) butter, softened
90 ml (3 fl oz) milk
Preheat oven to 180 C/350 F gas 4. Grease a 20cm (8in) square cake
tin. Line the base and sides with greaseproof paper. Grease the paper.
Sift the flour, cocoa, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda into a large mixing
bowl. Set aside. Put the butter and sugar into a separate bowl. Beat
with an electric whisk until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in the eggs and the
vanilla essence. Alternately beat the flour mixture and milk into the egg mixture.
Add a little at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the apples.
Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared tin and smooth the surface. Bake for 45-50
minutes, or until a warm skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out
clean. Leave for 5 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
Transfer to a large serving plate.
For the icing, put the icing sugar, cocoa, butter and milk in a mixing bowl. Beat
with an electric whisk, on low speed, until creamy and smooth. Spread over the top
and sides of the cake. Cut into squares and serve. |
RUN THE MILE IN SHERINGHAM
All of North Norfolk was invited to join in the fun on Saturday 15th July
when SheringhamPlus organised the Sport Relief Mile in Sheringham.
SheringhamPlus Events Coordinator Jayne Solberg said, "We were thrilled to host a
Sports Mile in Sheringham, a premier destination in North Norfolk. It's such a
beautiful setting for the mile-long route and with our market day in full swing too.
There was plenty for people to see and do after they finished the Mile.
Locals and visitors alike joined in with the fun and help support Sports Relief in such an
enjoyable, fun way." More than 200 people took part and the Town Crier Tony
Nelson started the race and walked the course. Mayor Peter Cox completed the course
in 14 minutes wearing his chains of office and MP Norman Lamb and his son took part.
The first runner home was Alex Foster. Sheringham Shantymen were singing at
the finish line for about 45 mins welcoming the participants in.

TAKE THE PLUNGE
If swimming is something you have always longed to do but never got around
to it for maybe a whole list of reasons then Wendy Metcalfe will tell you that it's never
too late to learn.
Wendy say's, "One of the main reasons that older people don't want to learn to swim
is because they do not want to be embarrassed. To be in a public poole with 10 or so
other people is not something older people want to do. I can offer lessons in total
privacy, in a relaxing atmosphere".

Wendy has been a qualified ASA swimming instructor teaching privately for over 20 years
and moved to Sheringham last year to a home with an indoor pool. She spent most of
her career working in repertory theatre as a stage manager but started out as the first
female lifeguard on the beaches in Gibraltar. She enjoys anything to do with the
water, including sea angling of which she is a member of the England ladies squad and won
a gold medal in 2004.
Wendy's pool has a relaxed feeling and there are changing rooms and shower facilities
available.
If you want to learn to swim or if you want to treat your relative to a course of lessons
then telephone: 01263 825505.

READERS LETTER
I wonder if you are aware of the names of the Sheringham Cricket Team
members? I descend from the Farrow fishing family, although I would like to
learn more and also find out if I have family there remaining. Can you possibly
point me in the right direction?
